What's Going On In Phnom Penh UNIVERSITY OF CAMBODIA LEADERSHIP & CAREER DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE OFFERED HOW TO DO'S An overflow crowd filled the 400-seat University of Cambodia Conference Center auditorium Friday August 4 to take part in the university's first annual Leadership and Career Development Conference. The two-day event that was FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. The audience was comprised of primarily college students with the goal being how to get a job and other than an education what was expected from them. The two-day event resulted in the attendees hearing stories of how difficult it would be to find a job. The most relevant information dispatched was how to physically and mentally prepare for a job in preparing a proper resume, attitude and appearance. It was pointed out that being rejected is not an end all and that is apart of seeking a job. Be positive and go forward and learn from one's experience. The closing session on Saturday drew approximately slightly over 150 people. They heard the observations of Dr. Greg Emery, Director, Global Leadership Center, Ohio University in the USA. Dr. Emery shared with the audience his observations of what he heard from the panelists. Most notably he pointed out what the boss of a major bank in Tokyo, Japan was looking for in an applicant for a job dealing with investments and being an venture capitalist. The bankers reply was he wanted someone that could speak well (conversational) and had good writing skills. "I can teach them the rest," he added. Full conference story coming.. After suffering an injury that forced me to give up my career as a musician I made a decision to return to school and learn something that I loved. A Broadcast Journalism course as well as production classes in television, radio and film were the answer. After realizing that carrying 27 credits in a semester was too much and I dropped to a realistic 18/19 credits. That may be too serious about catching up on one's schooling.... but there is a point. Education doesn't end in the classroom. You can learn from watching television. There is a TV show TOMMY LEE GOES TO COLLEGE that features former Motley Crew drummer Tommy Lee where he does just that and being nearly 50 years old (a half century) he enrolled at Nebraska University. The difference being his choice was for a TV show and not out of necessity. His interaction with the young students reminds me of my experience. The show is spot on and has educational and entertainment value. Age doesn't make a difference.... how to get along and understand each other does. For an entertaining show, particularly for students, tune in to Tommy Lee Goes to College. It airs on the music channel V (channel 8 in Phnom Penh) on Tuesday's at 7pm and 1am (Wed). It repeats on Wednesday at 2pm and 3pm on Sunday. Lee takes his finals on next weeks show and that could mean it will be the end the shows season. Lee is also featured in another TV show Rock Star Supernova. It features singers auditioning to become the lead singer of Lee's new group Supernova featuring former Guns N' Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke and bassist Jason Newsted formerly of Metallica. What an Asian student can learn from this show is in many cases there is a job for only ONE person. Each week one of the 15 job applicants that started with the show one is eliminated. Only 10 of the singers remain. The lesson is how people think and how to deal with rejection and that having talent and skills may not be enough to get you the job. Music is the entertainment value. On a previous show Newsted pointed out that when he auditioned for the job with Metallica that there were others auditioning that were better then he. "It's how you fit in," (with the Job and other personnel) he noted. What should not be learned from the members of Supernova is the rude way they talk to contestants and their arrogant behavior. Ironically Newsted is the most arrogant.
As co-host and former Red hot Chili Peppers guitarist Dave Navarro pointed out on a previous show arrogance is the behavior of a (perceived) rock star. Since the first show the Supernova group have toned down their arrogant comments. They now speak to the job applicants with more respect. For someone from an Asian culture that is applying for a real job in the real world, arrogant behavior will not get you a job. Rock Star airs on Star World on Wednesdays at 7:00am. It repeats on Wednesday at 7pm, 10:30pm and 1:30am. Also the singing portion of the show repeats at 10am on Thursday. After the SMS voting by the TV viewing audience the results are calculated. The result is televised on an elimination show that airs the following day on Thursday at 7am and repeats at 7pm and 10:30pm in Phnom Penh. CAMBODIAN PREMIERE (FOOTBALL) LEAGUE On one days notice the Cambodian Premiere League (CPL) restart of their season has been postponed again. The specific reason is not known at this time. The league is now scheduled to resume on September 2nd. The CPL stopped playing in May and was to resume this week on July 22nd. The delay and rescheduling will result in only nine games per team being played plus the playoffs. Originally the schedule was for 18 regular season games with each of the ten teams playing each other twice. NOTE: French films some with English subtitles are shown at the French school theater every Friday and Saturday evening. The times and titles of the films are listed on the back page of the Friday edition of the Cambodia Daily newspaper. INTERNET THEFT WARRANTS CAUTION TIP… Internet theft is rampant in the region. The work you are doing at many of the Internet cafes can be accessed from within or outside the shop from another computer. Also many of the shops have the computers set to remember passwords and save forms and downloads. In some shops we have found that legal documents that were scanned were saved in files that remain in the system for a week or more. Use the Fire Fox browser whenever possible. After receiving too many requests from business to change passwords we decided to look at how the computers are set at Internet shops. In doing so we found that there was too much to think about and self-protection was in order. When using an Internet shop computer it is wise to go TOOLS on the computers tool bar and click on INTERNET OPTIONS. From there in general information click on open to BLANK PAGE. Delete links to other sites as well as the history. Go to PRIVACY and set remember history to 0 days. Also delete remember history, clear the cache, save NO passwords. Make sure the computer will not SAVE OR REMEMBER PASSWORDS or COPY FORMS. Close and then click REFRESH THREE TIMES then open the browser. Check history. If there is a history something is wrong. Repeat the process or change computers. After you finish your work repeat the process to make sure the person that uses the computer after you can't track your information and go to the sites you've visited. Also some employees have been seen going to a computer after a customer has left the shop and clicked on and went to every website the customer visited. We have pointed out to some shops the copying of passwords and forms in their computers in Internet Options. Some were very squeamish and others were attentive and tried to correct the problem. In some cases customers input the spy devices. Some shops have set their computers so that what they have set can't be changed. You then have the option to leave and go to another shop where you can repeat the process and have a clean computer to use. Some shops have a system that whatever they scan will be saved to a file. This may not solve all of the problems but it's a start. More suggestions are welcomed. NR
