James Loving - National Radio Text Service

Saturday January 26, 2002

Heavily favored Vietnam was upset 1-0 by Laos in the ASEAN Under 20 Tournament in Phnom Penh, Cambodia today. The Vietnamese playing their third straight 2pm game in the blistering tropical heat wilted giving up a goal in the 40th minute. The temperature in the stands was estimatedto be 33 Celsius.

The strongly favored Vietnam squad entered the match undefeated giving up only one goal. In their first match they defeated Cambodia 3-1. They followed with a 6-0 victory over the Philippines.

Vietnam appeared seemed to underestimate Laos who also entered the match undefeated with victories over the Philippines 4-0 and 2-1 over Brunei.

Laos was more physical and aggressive defensively. Vietnam played selfishly. On many occasions players were displaying their individual skills and not looking to pass to the open man.

Laos now leads the group with a 3-0-0 record. They are followed by Vietnam 2-0-1, Philippines 1-0-2, Brunei 0-1-1 and Cambodia 0-1-2.
