NR Top 10 MaY 2007 according to Yahoo
James Loving - National Radio Text Service - Saturday May 19, 2007
Though slandered by Cambodia's English language press Dr. Beat Richner REAL STORY bolted to # 1 as National Radio's TOP STORY - Music is his business as musician Thailand's LAM MORRISON climber to # 2 - Former Cambodian national team star HOK SUCHETRA took two top 10 spots # 4 & # 10 - RACISM ranked # 9 In the rankings - Former NBA star DENNIS RODMAN rides again on the bubble of the top 10 by taking the 11th position
NR TOP 10 according to YAHOO Of the 638 National Radio stories listed on Yahoo Dr. Beat Richner rocketed to the top spot for the first time since the story was published in 2002. Though the story is five years old there seems to be a recent interest in the doctor as he reached the number three position in our NR all-time ranking published this past March. "He gave his life for this," said a tourist from America when he visited Siem Reap to attend a fund raising concert performed by Richner. What he was referring to was the two hospitals (now three) that Richner built to provide FREE health care for Cambodia children. Richner who hails from Switzerland has been slandered by the Cambodian English language press over the years for something he didn't do. They wrote stories that noted that Richner denied treatment to adults during the civil conflict n 1997. When the 10th anniversary came around this year they did it again without doing their research over that time and ASK HIM DIRECTLY WHAT HAPPENED. In response Richer had to take out a two page ad to defend himself and note that he didn't deny anyone treatment as he wasn't on the premises at the time. Though the doctor from Switzerland has been denied the respect that he deserves the WORLD VOTED (sorry Ryan Seacrest) and the REAL RICHNER STORY rocketed to the number one position in our National Radio rankings. Another philanthropic story made the list about Japanese philanthropist Toshu Fukami's contributions to Cambodia. The man also believes in health care having donated huge sums of money to the Sihanouk hospital in Phnom Penh. He also has contributed to a library named after him at the University of Cambodia in Phnom Penh. It is Fukami's belief that education in the key to overcome poverty. By his own example he is doing something about that. Thailand musician LAM MORRISON also has been receiving a lot of interest in recent months as his story that we began research in the early 1990's reached the number two position this month and jumped into the number six on out all-time charts in out last edition. The topic of RACISM has been of interest by our readers. This is an old story that keeps coming around since there continues to be people that continue to practice it. The story the readers continue to find interest in was written 10 years ago. It's about a radio sports talk host having someone fake a call to the talk show host and their topic was slandering the then owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team Rupert Murdoch as well as deriding Hideo Nomo the first Japanese player in the major leagues and maligning the Japanese press. Yes racism isn't about black and white it's about ignorance and some individual's insecurity. You can see it in all forms of society and media. A case in point is an English language magazine in Cambodia that is owned by a British person published a column in his January issue urging foreigner owned bars to deny entrance to black people while noting how lucky they were to be living in a non-equality country.. At that time he had five bars that were in line with his thinking. The most glaring problem is that the publication is largely about promoting prostitution, drugs and alcohol. Yes… you can't get that on you PDA but you can get it in this publication as well as racism. That is the dilemma that Cambodia is facing with racist foreigners infiltrating the country these past few years with their primary business being buying a bar and hiring prostitutes. With that kind of influence it certainly puts Cambodia's future for a healthy development and recovery in danger. Fortunately there is a Dr Beat Richner and a Toshu Fukami around to help influence and do things for Cambodia in a positive way. The brighter side of the NR listings are stories regarding Hok Suchetra taking tow positions in the ranking at # 4 and # 10. Suchetra arguably is the greatest player in Cambodian football history. He started late in his life at 20-years-old but had the natural talent to register 42 goals in only 64 International competitions against players that started playing the game when they were in their early teens. As his then coach Joachim Fickert said of Suchetra, ""He's a great talent. "Unfortunately he started a little bit late in football. If Jet (Sochetra) had played for 10 years he would be one of the world stars in football." Due to the problem of not being paid enough money from playing for the national side Suchetra took a job in the real world to help feed his family at the young age of 25.
