TV takes five of the top 10 spots with Sports Notes trailing with three. Football surged up to the number one spot in our sections most visited. There was a surprise interest in two press releases indicating a wide demographic in our readership
Wednesday August 25, 2010 TV RULES AGAIN It seems to be a seasonal thing as television once again has gained the most interest on our NR Top 10. Surprisingly some of our foreign coverage has created a huge interest while American Idol continues to maintain its presence on the charts. The serious side of television coverage commands the top two spots with National Geographic's series Locked Up Abroad securing those positions. The number one spot was about an American teenager who was lured into trafficking drugs and was caught. Eliadah McCord attempted to smuggle six pounds of Heroin from Bangladesh. In, Bangladesh, the law requires a minimum of two years in prison for possessing heroin. If found smuggling more than 25 grams (0.9 ounces), you are given either life terms or the death sentence. Fortunately McCord was helped by a US congressman. The second spot also went to the same series about Sandra Gregory a British woman who was locked up in Thailand. She was teaching English there and was lured into the money trap of trafficking drugs. Both of these stories were our fastest risers. The foreign TV coverage was a bit more involved as we participated as a judge in a talent/beauty contest only to be disappointed when we discovered how decisions were made as unlikely and undeserving contestants were pushed thorough while more beautiful and more deserving talent was shunned. When this became clear we dropped our coverage of the competition as it wasn't what it represented itself to be. We personally know several of the contestants which gave us a greater insight to what was going on. In addition we saw the voting results which were not adhered to. Though it's an old story the comparisons with how American idol has been in our opinion disingenuous with their results made our old story a new story. These accounts are linked and took the fourth and fifth spots on our charts. Other most notable columns were filmmaker Oliver Stone speaking to the University of Cambodia students. He talked about his films, life and the importance of life experience through travel and reading and studying history from which many of his films stories are based. That Phnom Penh column from February 2010 took the ninth position. The eighth spot was taken by our Sport Notes column GERMANY CHEWS UP & SPITS OUT ENGLAND. It lends itself to our previous prediction that the John Terry disrespecting his former Chelsea teammate Wayne Bridge would be the beginning of the end of England's World Cup winning chances. The bottom line is... WE WERE RIGHT. With the new television and football seasons in progress who will take the top spot next month? Stay tuned… SECTIONS MOST VISITED There were some changes this month in the sections most visited with international football/soccer jumping to the top of the charts. Our World Cup coverage largely factored in to its upward surge from the 3rd spot last month. There were only slight movements in the charts. The major change was the NBA has returned. Much of the interest our features on the LeBron James bashing that seems to be popular now with former NBA stars Magic Johnson, Karl Malone and Charles 'The round Mound of rebound' Barkley. There was a lot of attention drawn to our Soccer section from 2005-06. Raising the question is research the answer? TOP NON NR GENERATED ITEMS A press release regarding the gamer's conference The Global Challenge at ChinaJoy the 8th China Digital Entertainment Expo and Conference in Shanghai received the most interest of the non NR generated items. That was closely followed by an upcoming fundraising event featuring Diana Krall and Paul Simon. Both pieces generated enough interest to place them firmly in the middle of the pack of our NR TOP 10 if they qualified. They don't but given the interest in the subject matter they are noteworthy thus done and dusted. ARCHIVES Given the interest in our 2005-06 Soccer section and the beginning of a new football season we have selected two of that period's top stories. The first was the beginning of the demise of Brazil as being the best national team in the world. The second was one of football's all-time greatest moments when in the 2006 World Cup final Zinedine Zidane head butted Italy's Marco Matterazi. As they say life goes on but will any football fan forget that incident? The Top 10 most visited sections are:
