SINA AND NBA FORM STRATEGIC ALLIANCE TO PROVIDE COMPREHENSIVE ONLINE NBA EXPERIENCE TO FANS IN CHINA - SINA to Operate NBA’s Official Internet Site in China, NBA.com/china
Guangzhou, China Friday October 29, 2010 SINA Corporation a leading online media company and mobile value-added service (MVAS), and the National Basketball Association (NBA) have formed a strategic alliance through which SINA becomes the official operator of the NBA’s Internet site in China, NBA.com/china, it was announced at a press conference with Charles Chao, President and CEO of SINA and NBA Commissioner David Stern. The partnership makes SINA an Official Internet Partner of the NBA in China. NBA Legends Clyde Drexler and Sam Perkins were on hand for the announcement as were key SINA and NBA executives, including: Hong Du, SINA Chief Operating Officer; Tong Chen, SINA Executive Vice President and Chief Editor; Heidi Ueberroth, President, NBA International; and Collins Qian, Chief Operating Officer, NBA China. NBA content will be available on both SINA’s NBA section as well as on NBA.com/china when the 2010-11 season begins, creating a comprehensive, rich and interactive user experience giving fans in China unprecedented access to their favorite teams and players. Fans will enjoy a wide range of digital content, including the latest NBA news and updates, one live game per day, video highlights, an NBA account on SINA Weibo (SINA’s Microblog), NBA news on SINA’s WAP site for mobile users, and an NBA fantasy game. “SINA’s expertise in basketball coverage makes them an ideal partner to provide our fans in China with an extraordinary NBA experience online,” said Mr. Stern. “Our new partnership will help meet the growing demand for NBA information and content allowing us to communicate daily with our fans and continue to grow the game.” "The NBA has a growing fan base in China and we are delighted to partner with the league as this will further enhance our existing online sports coverage,” said Mr. Chao. Through NBA China, established in January 2008, the league has helped accelerate basketball’s growth in the country. An estimated 300 million people in China play basketball and fans across the country watch NBA games and programming through numerous television and digital media outlets. The NBA has hosted hundreds of grassroots events annually and, in October 2009, announced a partnership with the CBA to enhance the level of coaching in China. Through NBA Cares, the league has built 22 places where children and their families can live, learn or play, and supported earthquake relief and rebuilding efforts. NBA China has partnered with AEG in the development of state-of-the-art arenas in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, which have been home to world-class events.
