NEW YORK, NY USA

Wednesday January 20, 2010

The National Basketball Association and National Basketball Players Association announced that, in response to the recent tragedy in Haiti, they will contribute $1 million to support the relief efforts. The NBA and the Players Association will join forces with longtime community partner UNICEF and other relief agencies to provide emergency assistance to the estimated three million victims.

Philadelphia 76ers center and Haiti native Samuel Dalembert, who is also a players union representative, taped an NBA Cares public service announcement for UNICEF encouraging fans to contribute to the relief efforts. The PSA is scheduled to begin airing immediately on all NBA broadcasts and is linked here: http://www.nba.com/video/.

Prior to a Philadelphia home game, Dalembert addressed the crowd and asked for fans’ assistance in supporting the relief efforts. UNICEF will have volunteers throughout the Wachovia Center to collect donations from fans. UNICEF President and Chief Executive Officer Caryl Stern will be in attendance to accept a $100,000 donation from Dalembert, who will also match donations made by fans this evening.

“NBA players are deeply affected by this tragedy,” said National Basketball Players Association President Derek Fisher. “We hope our contribution helps provide immediate relief to those suffering in Haiti.”
