LAKERS’ KOBE BRYANT FINED $100,000

The Los Angeles Lakers Kobe Bryant made a homophobic slur to referee Bernie Adams after receiving a technical foul during Tuesday's game against the San Antonio Spurs. The remark prompted the NBA to fine Bryant followed by a statement by NBA Commissioner David Stern.

NBA Commissioner David Stern issued the following statement:

“Kobe Bryant’s comment during last night’s game was offensive and inexcusable. While I’m fully aware that basketball is an emotional game, such a distasteful term should never be tolerated. Accordingly, I have fined Kobe $100,000. Kobe and everyone associated with the NBA know that insensitive or derogatory comments are not acceptable and have no place in our game or society.”

Bryant later apologized for his comments and said it in no way reflected his attitude towards the gay and lesbian communities Bryant was concerned about his image as a role model for youths. In 2003 Bryant overcame another negative incident that marred his image when he was arrested and accused of sexual assault in a case that was later dropped.
