USA Sullivan's Steakhouse, Palm Desert, California USA makes its debut as a corporate sponsor at the ninth annual Jim Murray Invitational Golf Classic at SilverRock Resort in La Quinta, Calif., on Monday, December 3, 2007. "When we heard about such a great foundation to work with, my first question was how can Sullivan's help and be involved," said Shang Skipper, general manager of the upscale El Paseo steakhouse in Palm Desert. "We have an opportunity to help the future leaders of their field get off their feet and cement a positive foundation for them to pursue their dreams. We look forward to a long relationship supporting and helping the Jim Murray Memorial Foundation" As part of the sponsorship, Sullivan's will provide a full luncheon for all participants in The Murray Golf Classic on December 3. The Jim Murray Memorial Foundation was established in 1999 to perpetuate Pulitzer Prize-winning sports columnist Jim Murray's legacy and the love and dedication to his extraordinary career in journalism. Each year, the foundation awards seven $5,000 journalism scholarships to college student throughout the country. The 2007 JMMF scholarship winners are Zach Berman, Syracuse University; Brittany Hughes, Ohio University-Athens; Melissa Katz, Trinity College-Hartford; Gabe Khouli, Ball State University; Elizabeth Manring, University of Missouri; Josh Moyer, Penn State University; and Dallas Woodburn, University of Southern California. Jim Murray's illustrious career began at the New Haven (Conn.) Register after graduating in 1943 from Trinity College in Hartford, Conn. After a stint at the now extinct Los Angeles Herald Examiner, he joined Time & Life (Time, Inc.) as the Hollywood cinema correspondent. Murray, a founding father of Sports Illustrated magazine in 1954, joined the Los Angeles Times newspaper in February 1961. He won a Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 1990 and was named National Sportswriter of the Year 14 times, 12 in consecutive years. Murray's outstanding work landed him a spot in the writers' wing of Cooperstown (NY) Baseball Hall of Fame in 1988. Murray died August 16, 1998. © Copyright: National Radio.
