Sabay's (Cambodia) rendition of America's Grammy Awards - Brace yourselves… STICKER SHOCK @ LUCKY MARKETS, the meat is on - PHNOM PENH TOP 3 STORIES our most recent Phnom Penh story published July 31st bolted to the top of our Top 3 Phnom Penh charts
Phnom Penh, Cambodia Monday August 8, 2011 SABAY EYES CAMBODIAN TALENT It's near crunch time for the first elimination of Sabay (Cambodia) rendition of America's Grammy Awards. The finalists of three categories of singers, TV presenters and actors will trim down the almost 190 star nominees to the Top 10 in each category singer, actor and MC with a splitting the men and women. The Top 10 selections to compete for the title will be announced in September with the finals to be held December 2nd. Since the beginning of June the public have voted via SMS for their Top 10 choices. The nominees were selected by what Sabay describes as people in the know of who would be the most popular to make up the 190 selections. Some of those nominated jump out of the pile for various reasons. Three of the four presenters of TV-3s Women Talk 7:30 AM morning show are in the mix. One is the former Freshie contest 2006 winner Keo Phalika. Another is the senior member the group and of Cambodian television and music video scene Meas Molina. Molina has been a fixture on the Cambodian television scene for the past decade that we've been paying attention to Cambodian television programming. The third Women Talk host selected for the Sabay competition Heng Phana who is from a new crop of television personalities over the past few years. Her background is somewhat mysterious. Sabay has very little in the way of background information on its selections. She sprung up on the Cambodia TV scene about four years ago as a replacement on Women Talk for another Freshie contestant Vanda Meas who finished third in the 2005 Freshie event. As a presenter Phana is one of the best in Cambodia. She has an energetic bubbly personality on her good days, has a nice voice and exceptional posture. She has hosted and co-hosted several other programs on TV-3. Her talent is strong enough that she has done well is hosting shows on her own. Her weakness is that at times she has s tendency talk too much but is very considerate of her guests and other co-hosts by not talking over them which is known in the business as stepping on someone. There are a number of former Freshie contestants that have been selected and some history that bears that out. Sabay was a key sponsor of the most recent Freshie contest its 10th edition held this year. STICKER SHOCK @ LUCKY MARKETS Brace yourselves… the heat or should we say the meat is on at Lucky Markets. Overnight the price of ground meat leaped $1.50 a kilo. Today August 8th the price marked on the packages in the bins of the Sihanouk branch was $10.00 a kilo. Sitting next to it were yesterday's packages marked August 7th selling for $8.50. The good news is that meat kills and perhaps its time to become vegetarians. PHNOM PENH TOP 3 STORIES Though we've been in China for 26 days in July our most recent Phnom Penh story published July 31st bolted to the top of our Top 3 Phnom Penh charts within three days from our sample taken August 3rd. The SABAY WANTS TO BE THE GRAMMY AWARDS OF CAMBODIA grabbed the spotlight and knocked off activist Theary Seng's number one spot with her role as the protagonist in the video documentary Facing Genocide. CNN FAILS TO SEE THE (RED) LIGHT notched the third spot. That reveals how CNN is so focused on sensationalized news programming they fail to do it in a professional manner. They focus on celebrity presentations while ignoring the real issues that are depicted in documentaries such as Red Light where the topic is the star and not the celebrity. In the past CNN has sent their perceived superstar reporters to Cambodia but their portrayal of what goes on is about them and not about the subject. A case in point is their as we termed Rhinestone Rambo investigator that was in Phnom Penh with his pretty girlfriend doing undercover work about eh child prostitution business. He was proud of his Dick Tracy type video camera watch with which he did some of his undercover work. When he notified the police of his find the child prostitution site was empty when he arrived with the police. He then feared his life and ran running scared out of town only to surface in Beverly Hills California to raise money for more of his undercover work. His lack of the real world in which that business exists indicates how naive CNN and their Rhinestone Rambo are. CNN… wake up and smell the coffee…
