Additional Results of Joint Comprehensive Hispanic Poll by Univision and the Associated Press Revealed Majority of Hispanics Approve of the Way President Barack Obama is Handling His Job, Yet Give Him Mixed Ratings on Key Issues, And Disapprove of Congress’ Performance Additional Details Revealed on Hispanics’ Opinion on Immigration and Arizona SB1070 Law
MIAMI, Florida USA -- (BUSINESS WIRE) Tuesday May 18, 2010 Univision Communications Inc. announced additional results of its joint poll with The Associated Press, the most comprehensive Hispanic poll conducted to-date. When asked about the President’s and Congress’ performance, the survey results indicate that 66% of Hispanics approve of the way President Barack Obama is handling his job, but only 35% approve of the way Congress is handling its job. Moreover, when specifically asked whether they approved or disapproved of the way Republicans or Democrats in Congress are handling their jobs, 27% approved of Republicans’ performance while 51% approved of Democrats’ performance. Other interesting topics addressed in the poll include: * Hispanics gave mixed approval ratings of the way President Barack Obama is handling each of the following issues: * Education – 69% approve * U.S. relationships with other countries – 69% approve * Health care – 66% approve * Energy – 63% approve * The environment – 60% approve * Taxes – 59% approve * Terrorism – 56% approve * The economy – 55% approve * Situation in Iraq – 51% approve * Situation in Afghanistan – 50% approve * Federal budget deficit – 49% approve * Unemployment – 49% approve * Immigration – 45% approve * Gas prices – 39% approve * Immigration * 56% of Hispanics see it as a negative for the country that Congress has not passed a comprehensive immigration bill more than a year into the Obama administration * When asked how much of the blame they would place on a political party or the president for not passing an immigration bill, 45% of Hispanics placed all or some of the blame on Republicans, 29% on Democrats and 20% on President Barack Obama * 33% of Hispanics are very likely to vote against a political party or candidate that took a position on immigration that they disagreed with, even if they agreed with that party or candidate on most other issues * Arizona SB1070 Law * 73% of Hispanics believe it would be a very serious problem if the police in Arizona wound up stopping and questioning Hispanics who are U.S. citizens or legal immigrants as they try to enforce the law The AP-Univision Poll was conducted from May 7 to the 12th by GFK Roper Public Affairs and Media. It involved landline and cell phone interviews with 901 Hispanic adults and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 5.3 percentage points.
