Saturday January 17, 2009 - National Radio Text Service To many 2008 was a year they would like to forget. The rise in the price of oil to $147 a barrel and the world economic crisis had the greatest negative impact. Though these are stories that impacted the world it is not the focus of National Radio given our emphasis on sports, entertainment, travel and a touch of business. What we did cover was in January the resignation of Yahoo CEO Terry Semel was indicative of things to happen as Yahoo walks in the shadow of poor management, unethical business practices and a huge drop in the value of its stock. On a lighter side of things in the world of entertainment how the Cambodian entertainment business functions was brought to light as a Grammy Entertainment CEO Glenn Lasalle revealed that in Cambodia mangers sign their artists to 20-year contracts. That equates to the practice of indentured servants. If a manager doesn't deliver the artist's career is virtually over. The CEO made a lot of promises about developing talent but didn't deliver. January was a big month for reality shows Pinoy Big Brother, American Idol, Amazing Race USA and the Contender Asia. Most notably was the relationship with an Asian father daughter team in the Amazing Race USA. The father continually berated his daughter on camera. She tolerated it and by the end of the series he started to recognize his shortcomings and was man enough to admit that he had to change his ways. The revelation was that his daughter is very intelligent and has very good job which requires brain power. Our repeated concerns regarding our perception of the poor treatment by the producers and powers that be on the Philippine reality shows came into focus with their Big Brother program. The person who portrays Big Brother comes off as if the show is about him and not the contestants. He deals with them in a condescending manner and favoritism is also involved. This behavior and practice is not a one time thing but repeats itself with virtually every reality series on the ABS-CBN Network/TFC (The Filipino Channel). February was a month where sports took center stage Eli Manning led the New York Giants to a Super Bowl title and Shaquille O'Neal was traded from the Miami Heat to the Phoenix Suns. There were some questions raised if this was a good move for the Suns who played a fast break running game style. The question was could Shaq keep up with the pace or would the Suns have to change their game to accommodate the big fella. Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard aka Superman stunned the world with his imaginative win in the NBA All-Star weekend slam dunk contest. After several tries in his regular uniform Howard put on a Superman's cape and took off with a high flying dunk that won the competition and fan adoration. In business Disney upped the ante with their chief executive Robert Igar when they signed him to a five year contract. Igar is a young, vibrant and incisive business man who was previously at ABC/Capitol Cities before moving to Disney where he oversaw several innovative projects. MARCH is a month that features the NCAA basketball tournament in the USA deemed March Madness where collegiate teams vie for the national championship as being the best team in college basketball. It's one off competition that involves roughly half of the Division 1 college teams. The master of leading his team to 10 championships including seven in a row is the great John Wooden. Wooden's nearest rival for winning titles with only four is Kentucky's Adolph Rupp. Though we did many a radio feature on Wooden as a tribute we took a look back on a story we published on his success from our archives file. Basketball loomed large in the NBA that month after Shaquille O'Neal was traded from the Miami Heat to the Phoenix Suns. It was a controversial trade as Shaq is 36-years-old, carrying a lot of weight and is not so fast. Phoenix was successful with their quickness and fast break offense. The trade slowed them down and the team had to adapt to Shaq and his slower pace. That recognition carried over to this season as NBA analyst and former Olympic team and NBA player Doug Collins remarked during an NBA telecast December 4th, "The Suns have lost their Mo Jo offense. They've lost their swagger." Another big trade was made as Jason Kidd returned to the Dallas Mavericks. One of out top stories of the year also was published that month although we aren't sure of what caused the impetuous. There were two major subjects one being singer Stacy Orrico appearing in concert in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. That column also noted that David Hernandez was eliminated from American Idol. Thailand's Songkran festival is always a subject of concern since it can be dangerous to tourists (causing disease) due to the throwing of water some from the filthy canals which is Bangkok's sewer system. Water is also thrown at people driving motor bikes and creating a slick road which causes accidents. People also drink and drive inadvertently causing deaths. The NBA's Terry Lyons was a top draw of interest as he retired from the NBA after 26-years with the league office. Among his credits Lyons was instrumental in the effort to integrate NBA players into the Olympic movement prior to 1992. Those efforts helped propel the NBA onto the global stage at an exponential rate. JANUARY Business

Water from the canals is often used. The canals are Bangkok's sewers. The powder thrown combined with the water creates a chalk like film that can cause damage to your belongings. - CAMBODIA'S KHMER NEW YEAR. - Entertainment - TV Sports
