2007 YEAR IN REVIEW National Radio Text Service - Wednesday January 2, 2008 Looking back on the top stories of 2007 two things jumped out most notably June with five stories of interest while January and May with four were at the top months. Second our NR Top 10 Stories surged in reader attention. The March NR Top 10 was the fastest ever riser up the charts until overtaken in successive months of May, June and July with July eventually becoming the most read NR Top 10 column followed by May. The year started of with the blockbuster news that David Beckham Goes Hollyweird and signed with the Los Angeles Galaxy of the MLS in a five year deal reportedly worth US $250 million. CNN founder Ted Turner was our top business personality in our BIZ WHO IS January column. Cambodia's Freshie Boy & Girl contest selected their winners in what was supposed to be the last ever contest of the series. Fortunately the producers changed their mind and their will be a 2008 contest. RONAN CONCERT IN PHNOM PENH was our top Cambodian story written in 2007. American Idol racked up more stories for a TV series with three. The first being the controversy of sexy Antonela Barba who raised the ire of judge Simon Cowell who felt the only reason that she made it as far as she did in the contest was because of her looks. Another Cowell nemesis Sanjaya Malakar followed the reader's interest and AI fans when he was booted off the show much to Cowell's pleasure. When it was all said and done AI winner Jordin Sparks had the last laugh in taking the big prize after Cowell said that he didn't think she could make it to the final. So much for what SIMON SAYS. In a related AI story former winner Carrie Underwood won a Grammy Award. Larry King was the top TV personality. Our June BIZ WHO IS backgrounder on King was one of the year's fastest rising stories. A fast riser doesn't necessarily make it to the number one spot but is a quick mover up to the Top 10. Two other King stories jumped out in June and July when he interviewed the two remaining Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Star. He followed that up with an interview with Paris Hilton. Jose Mourinho was the top sports personality as our Mourinho Must Go To Be England Manager in our April Sports Notes column that bolted up the charts. He actually did what we suggested in September when resigned from Chelsea. Our responce was Jose Mourinho He's The Man and that story also rocketed up the charts as well. When the England FA finally offered him the England manager's job in December and he turned them down we wrote MOURINHO NO, CAPELLO GO which also became a top reader's choice. Two NBA stories gained significant interest led by 'What's In That Laker Water' a story that questions what's up with the Lakers after Kobe Bryant demanded to be traded. That story was followed by our report on US $100 million NBA contracts given to rookies who have yet to prove themselves. Our French language readers followed through by reading our original column on that subject that we wrote in 1994. Money is the name of the game and fast forward to today that beat still goes on. HAPPY NEW YEAR January 2007 Sports
