Thursday May 7, 2009 AMERICA VOTES OPPOSITE THE JUDGES CRITIQUES It was a rock theme on American Idol this past week and that is where two of the final four contestants gave very storing performances that could lead to the direction of their careers. From week to week the show changes the music genre with the result being that for some singers the category may be out of their element and they could have a poor performance. With former Guns and Roses guitarist Slash being the mentor this week the Idols got down and dirty with rock n' roll. Adam Lambert stole the spotlight by opening the show with Led Zeppelin's 'Whole Lotta Love.' By far it was his best ever performance on the program. It was the second best performance we've ever witnessed on American Idol trailing David Archuleta's rendition of the John Lennon hit 'Imagine' last season. Allison Iraheta took on Janis Joplin's 'Cry Baby' which received mixed reviews from the judges who all agreed that Iraheta has a Joplin type voice as we have been stating throughout the season. The problem was they thought it wasn't the right song for her. Judge Kara DioGuardi made the most spot on statement when she suggested that Joplin's 'Piece of My Heart' would have been a better song choice. "You are predisposed to the Joplin thing," Slash told Iraheta at their rehearsal. Iraheta has the voice but what she lacks Joplin's painful life experience in which Joplin's lived a sorrowful drug afflicted life. Another factor is Joplin was much older when she became a star and Iraheta is only 17. The pain in Joplin's life came out in her songs. By comparison Iraheta has lived a good life compared to Joplin and that's a good thing. Lambert and Iraheta sang as a duo doing Foghat's 'Slow Ride.' All of the judges raved about their performance with DioGuardi and Paula Abdul suggesting that they should record as a duo on each others albums. In our view both of these singers would be a perfect fit for an already established rock band that needs a vocalist. The previously televised Superstar television show was the perfect example of established rock bands that were looking for a vocalist. After we wrote this piece prior to the results show that point came into focus. Former Guns & Roses guitarist Slash has a new album coming out which features as he says several well known vocalists which he can't name. Should he tour both Iraheta and Lambert would be a good fit, together they would be a monster addition as they compliment each other. For the other final four AI contestants Danny Gokey who previously was the only contestant who has never been in the bottom three and Kris Allen both found the rock genre being a bit out of their comfort zone. They did OK but they are more soulful type singers. Allen has a smooth voice that could apply to country music material while Gokey has a raspy quality to his voice more in line with Joe Cocker styling. The judges gave Allen the harshest critiques after his rendition of the Beatles 'Come Together.' Kara DioGuardi said, "You're definitely the softer side of rock. Not a great performance. You're trying too hard." Paula Abdul followed with "You need to have a little bit more energy." Simon Cowell then chimed in with, "It was actually a boring song." When host Ryan Seacrest announced the results of the 64 million votes cast Allen was the first saved followed by Lambert then Gokey resulting in Iraheta being eliminated. NOTE: Chris Daughtry who also was eliminated in the fourth position in season five (2006) and his band made a guest appearance on the results show. Taylor Hicks won season five followed by Katharine McPhee and Elliott Yamin. Without question Daughtry has had the most successful career of the four. He was presented and Platinum record award for selling over 5 million albums worldwide. After Idol he was signed by 19 Entertainment whose principle owner is Simon Fuller the creator of American Idol. NATIONAL
