Video Beat MAX - THE PINOY DREAM ACADEMY'S PERSECUTION OF LAARNI - Part 4
James Loving - National Radio Text Service
Laarni Losala had to deal with isolation and verbal abuse while trying to study and prepare for a weekly performance show that would determine her fate if she would receive enough praise and recognition to continue on the program as each week one contestant is eliminated. Footage from a daily show of Dream Academy featured Laarni much of the time constantly being berated by many of her fellow contestants and she was depicted as the bad seed on the show BUT... THERE WAS A TURNING POINT - Recommended TV Listings
Saturday August 23, 2008
LAARNI LOSALA'S TURNING POINT Through it all Laarni Losala had taken the ridicule that was largely instigated by Inaki and his gang of 18-year-old contestants. The verbal abuse drove the young lady from a very poor family to rebel and defend herself. In doing so she was further labeled as being the Independent Woman who was hard to get along with. The situation is reminiscent of being in grade school and the school bully picks out a weak undernourished kid with shabby clothes to pick a fight with and make an example of to show off to his friends who have the mentality of a sheep. Though he picks on a weak wounded person the bully wants everyone to know that he is a tough guy and is not to be messed with. In the process Laarni had to deal with isolation, verbal abuse while trying to study and prepare for a weekly performance show that would determine her fate if she would receive enough praise and recognition to continue on the program as each week one contestant is eliminated. On the daily portions of the Philippines Pinoy Dream Academy reality show they televise a program of roughly 30 minutes from video footage from footage taped 24/7 by 40 cameras in the house in which the contestants train and reside with the focus primarily being how they coexist. From that footage much of the time they featured Laarni constantly being berated by many of her fellow contestants but ironically she was depicted as being the bad seed on the show. The first week of the program she received the lowest score given to the then 16 contestants but survived being eliminated due to another contestant being dropped from the program due to hypertension and hospitalization. Though there was a negative influence in the house from a person (Inaki) that they chose to participate on the program the mentors ignored it and let the dissension continued to build to a fervor pitch. Laarni continued defending herself and tried to focus o her studies, training and survival. Though in our opinion she has the most powerful and best quality voice on the program she was selected as being one of the worst singers four times during the first eight weeks. A turning point came in the fifth week in which the songs had a theme of sensuality. One of the reasons Laarni was ridiculed was some in the group of contestants complained about her lack of hygiene. Around the house Laarni dresses in baggy, shabby clothes while the other contestants whom largely come from privileged families wear the latest stylish new fashion attire. Laarni is competing in a world of haves when she is a have not. She has been on her own since she was 15 trying to work her way through college, become a singer and earn enough money to help her impoverished family financially. On that fifth week Laarni stood out by singing Natural Woman. It was the best performance of the year so much so a video of that performance is on You Tube. Though in our opinion she did well every week it was the first time she received praise from the mentors and judges. It was an improvement on the mentor's part to finally give the girl the credit she deserved but not credit enough as she received only the second highest grade for the night tied with Liezel who was awarded as the best singer for the previous four weeks of the contest. An example of how Laarni was abused by the mentors while they give favoritism to other students is the mentors chose the songs they were to sing. When the top student Liezel met with the mentors she was told that they were going to give her a song that she could relax with to have fun and enjoy. They gave her Best Of My Love by The Emotions a song that compliments her voice and shows her commercial side. With Laarni the said they wanted to challenge her (translation - put her in a tough spot to force her out of the competition). They assigned her Bohemian Rhapsody sung by Freddie Mercury of Queen which is one of the most difficult songs anyone could sing. Mercury and American Idol's Michael Johns are the only singers that I've ever herd do justice to the song and Mercury is dead. It's a song that is so difficult that if you had the choice you would pass. Laarni didn't have that choice. It was as if the mentors were trying to kill off Laarni. The mentors have given Liezel and Bugoy commercial songs that enhance the commercial side of their talent while they assign Laarni songs that are more about challenging her and trying to expose her weakness rather than display her strong commercial talent. Her rendition of Natural Woman is exactly they type of song that shows her true commercial strength, songs that the viewing audience can relate to. The mentors choice of Bohemian Rhapsody for her resulted in Laarni being in the bottom four. By miraculous divine intervention apparently given their guilt they saved Laarni from viewer voting which she overwhelmingly won the previous week. She was also in the bottom four during week seven and she wasn't saved by the mentors or fellow scholars and was left to the mercy of viewer voting if she would be eliminated from the program. She was up against two 18-year-olds Miguel and Apple one of her tormentors. Much to the shock of the mentors Laarni received 72.74% of the votes to remain on the show. Miguel received 13.96% and Apple 13.30%. It was at this point of being the viewer's choice that the mentor's attitude towards her changed drastically. The other turning point for Laarni was Bea another tormentor was eliminated in the fifth week. Bea had yelled at Laarni in front of the other students as well as an International television audience that brought Laarni to tears as a result of the disrespect and embarrassment. Bea's verbal abuse was so intense that her boyfriend Miguel came to Laarni's defense while pointing out to Bea that she shouldn't talk to Laarni that way. After Bea's departure Laarni started to relax, smile and come out of her shell. When tormentor Apple was eliminated in week eight Laarni became more relaxed and started to sing around the house and practice. While she was practicing in another room Inaki who was in the kitchen with the other students forcefully said DISTRACTION, DISTRACTION. That prompted Miguel to go to Laarni and complain that she was disturbing others with her loud singing. Laarni pointed out that no other contestant received such a complaint. After being singled out again Laarni bounced back last week in week nine and for the first time was selected as being the top scholar for week nine. She was overwhelmed. The strange thing is her performance was nowhere near as strong as her performance of Natural Woman. In being selected the weeks Top Scholar Laarni is scheduled to perform on ASAP an ABS-CBN variety show Sunday August 24. The show is televised shortly after 2 PM Singapore/Hong Kong time and 1 PM in Thailand/Cambodia. ASAP features all of their top talent on the ABS-CBN Network including Sarah Geronimo the true example of a young star with talent, dignity and class. Liezel and Bugoy are the only other Dream Academy contestants who have consecutively appeared on ASAP the previous two weeks. (Note: ABS-CBN shows are seldom on schedule). For Laarni she is finally receiving the praise that she deserves. Her talent is obvious to those who are intelligent and have no agenda of manipulating results…. and that is one of the biggest problems with the Pinoy Dream Academy program. NEXT - THE PERSECUTION OF LAARNI - PART 5 - MIND GAMES NOTE Inaki's performance is buffoonery and reminiscent of a trained circus seal and nothing more. His voice is horrible. Laarni has talent and a big voice that other contestants often fear and admit it. A point of fact is American Idol judge Simon Cowell often remarks to a contestant 'You're performance is not memorable." This is a statement he could never make to Laarni after she sang 'Natural Woman.' It by far was the best performance of anyone on the show this season but was sternly graded and finished tied for 2nd in the ratings for the night. Her rendition can be seen and heard on You Tube. Go to Google and type in Pinoy Dream Academy. After that come up add Laarni. The Link to the Natural Woman video will appear on the first page. Listen and you will see and hear the injustice heaped on her. Her song is memorable. Conversely Inaki is on You Tube and is accused of lying. There is also a video of him during tryouts for the show where he sings Seals & Croft's 'Summer Breeze' which he never attributed to them and says it was his arrangement. The video includes the Seals & Croft's version as well as another performer and Inaki's. Go to Google and type in Pinoy Dream Academy. After that come up add Inaki. The Link to the Inaki Lied video will appear on the first page. The following is the heading on the Google page. http://getitfromboy.net/pinoy-dream-academy-inaki-scandal/ A reader emailed me a tip saying that Inaki of Pinoy Dream Academy Season 2 has a scandal but not the kind of scandal that you think, lol, but the sort where Inaki lied to his teeth when he auditioned for Pinoy Dream Academy 2. The tipster sent me to a link in YouTube where Inaki, without batting an eyelash said he originally arranged his audition piece “Summer Breeze” to the amazement of the clueless judges. Just check this video below to see Inaki scandalously lying. After you see that and Laarni singing Natural Woman you can plainly see something is wrong with this show and Inaki is undeservedly involved. Why…favoritism, family connections with the network is not clear? That remains to be revealed. For an enterprising Philippine journalist or blogger that is where the real story is.
