Tuesday August 19, 2008 IT'S ON HENDRIX A LEGEND IN HIS OWN TIME It's a YO for this months TV watch or VCD pickup. As the fall approaches films worth watching are returning to the air. As usual while flicking through the channels I came across the film HENDRIX on the MGM channel. It's the story about legendary rock musician Jimi Hendrix. What's amazing about the film is that it strongly relates to me personal life that is another story that I'll divulge at another time. The Hendrix rockumentary film was initially released in 1973 after Hendrix's death September 18, 1970 (aged 27) of asphyxiation induced by drugs. For music lovers this is a must see or acquire given it covers a period in music history that will never be duplicated. It reflects the peace and love theme of the 60's that turned sour in the 70's. At the time Hendrix was a mysterious figure. When he would come to a club that I worked 'The Experience' in Hollywood to jam (sit in and play). He created such excitement it was as if the lord had returned to earth. This film captures his human side as he evolved from a struggling musician and rose to super star status under the tutelage of Chas Chandler and his real life relationship with his father. The movie contains concert footage from 1967 to 1970, including the Monterey Pop Festival the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival, Woodstock and a Berkeley concert. The film also includes interviews with Hendrix' contemporaries, family and friends. People appearing in the film include Paul Caruso, Eric Clapton, Billy Cox, Alan Douglas, Germaine Greer, Hendrix' father, James A. "Al" Hendrix, Mick Jagger, Eddie Kramer, Buddy Miles, Mitch Mitchell, Juggy Murray, Little Richard, Lou Reed and Pete Townshend. Ironic and sad as it is it demonstrates my opinion of those of us who were involved in the music business in that Rock n Roll genre that many would not live to see the age of 50. Chandler died of a heart condition in Newcastle, England in 1996 at the age of 58. He made 50 but 58 is relatively young and the rigors of that rock n' roll period obviously had an impact. The estate of Jimi Hendrix authorized the 1973 film to be re-released on video and DVD in 1999. An expanded DVD edition was issued in 2005, featuring a new documentary. THE PERSECUTION OF LAARNI - Part 2 When Pinoy Dream Academy Season 2 came on the air in mid June I wasn't familiar with any of the contestants and rightly so since it is supposed to be a show about discovering and training unknown talent. From the beginning the show had a strange atmosphere as there was a lot of bickering and backstabbing which emanated from a privileged group of 18-year-olds towards the over 18's. Their focus was primarily directed towards one girl who wasn't chosen at the beginning of the program to be on a team. She was left over as no choice and assigned the team with the last pick. As the mystery unraveled it was disclosed the anti Laarni group didn't care for her hygiene. She comes from a very poor and abusive background. For anyone familiar with third world countries the luxury of indoor toilet facilities, heat and running water are not a part of the underprivileged equation. They also lack the money to buy nice clothes. On the first show we were impressed by her vocal skills when she sang In Your Eyes. She was nervous but still delivered. The judges and mentors were not impressed and heaped heavy criticism on her performance, placed her in the bottom four and gave her the LOWEST GRADE of 5.17. We felt it was excessive and uncalled for. That planted the seed of our interest in why were they persecuting this young lady who all she wants to do is sing, make a decent life for herself, make money at her craft and return to help her poor family financially. What emerged was the ringleaders of the anti Laarni faction were Inaki, Bea and Apple. All come from a more comfortable background than Laarni and none have her talent and quality of voice. Was it a question of jealousy or just discrimination? The abuse heaped on her by her classmates caused Laarni to rebel and defend herself as anyone with any character would and she withdrew from her abusers thus she was named the Independent Woman. The judges and mentors continued to over criticize her and praise the no talent, obnoxious Inaki. His bio reveals that he comes from a well known entertainment family in the Philippines. That sparked our concern about his receiving favoritism since his lack of talent didn't warrant being on the show. He by far is the worst singer of all the contestants yet he continues to receive praise and survive. He also continues to berate Laarni. Bea was eventually expelled and told by judge Gerard Salonga that she lacks the vocal skills to be in the contest. After Bea's departure Laarni's life became more pleasurable as she started to smile. The irony is Salonga and the other judges fail to note to Inaki that can't sing, they always ignore that fact a avoid calling attention to his voice and would say, "I enjoyed your performance." (OH PLEASE!!!) The irony here is Laarni who was in the bottom 4 times was included in a bottom three group with Miguel and Apple. After the viewers gave Laarni 72.74% of the approval vote to Miguel's' 13.96% and Apple's 13.30% it became obvious that the viewers overwhelmingly disagree with the judges and mentors about the quality of Laarni's talent. Apple was expelled and Laarni's life became more pleasant inside the Academy. The following week Laarni was in the bottom four with Bunny, Sen and Miguel. She was saved by the mentors. There was a 3-3 tie between Miguel and Sen. Because Laarni was saved by the mentors, her vote counted twice. She saved Miguel. She was later to find out her support of Miguel wasn't appreciated. After Apple's departure Larni started to practice more and sing. While she was in another room practicing Inaki was in the kitchen with the other contestants and started vehemently repeating, DISTRACTION, DISTRACTION regarding Laarni's singing. At which point his friend Miguel confronted Laarni and said she was annoying everyone. She returned to the kitchen and everyone left except Miguel. She pointed out that there were no complaints to other contestants about their practicing and singing. When they say the devil gets his due or bad karma will come back on you it applied this past week. Laarni was chosen the top scholar and Miguel was again in the bottom four along with Inaki and Chris. When it came time for her to cast her vote for which she would save she voted for Chris thus Miguel and Inaki will have to wait to see who the viewing public wants to remain in the house. Inaki's performance is buffoonery and reminiscent of a trained circus seal and nothing more. His voice is horrible. Laarni has talent and a big voice that other contestants often fear and admit it. A point of fact is American Idol judge Simon Cowell often remarks to a contestant 'You're performance is not memorable." This is a statement he could never make to Laarni after she sang 'Natural Woman.' It by far was the best performance of anyone on the show this season but was sternly graded and finished 3rd in the ratings for the night. Her rendition can be seen and heard on You Tube. Go to Google and type in Pinoy Dream Academy. After that come up add Laarni. The Link to the Natural Woman video will appear on the first page. Listen and you will see and hear the injustice heaped on her. Her song is memorable. Conversely Inaki is on You Tube and is accused of lying. There is also a video of him during tryouts for the show where he sings Seals & Crofts 'Summer Breeze' which he never attributed to them and says it was his arrangement. The video includes the Seals & Crofts version as well as another performer and Inaki's. Go to Google and type in Pinoy Dream Academy. After that come up add Inaki. The Link to the Inaki Lied video will appear on the first page. The following is the heading on the Google page. http://getitfromboy.net/pinoy-dream-academy-inaki-scandal/ A reader emailed me a tip saying that Inaki of Pinoy Dream Academy Season 2 has a scandal but not the kind of scandal that you think, lol, but the sort where Inaki lied to his teeth when he auditioned for Pinoy Dream Academy 2. The tipster sent me to a link in YouTube where Inaki, without batting an eyelash said he originally arranged his audition piece “Summer Breeze” to the amazement of the clueless judges. Just check this video below to see Inaki scandalously lying. (Note: the spelling is really Iñaki, but most keyboards nowadays don’t have “ñ” hence the change to “n”). After you see that and Laarni singing Natural Woman you can plainly see something is wrong with this show and Inaki is undeservedly involved. Why…favoritism, family connections with the network is not clear? That remains to be revealed. For an enterprising Philippine journalist or blogger that is where the real story is.
